In a series of sumi-ink paintings titled Triangulation Premnath references documentation of protests and diagrams from police manuals to map the collision between forces of power and dissent. In this series he specifically considers the reconfiguration of police barricades into triangular forms deployed by protesters in Hong Kong against the police. In his site-specific installation titled Kettling, Premnath uses barricades as the armature that simultaneously holds up and constrains figure-like sculpture made of foam and plaster that he calls “slumps.” Taken together this project is a meditation on the widespread popular uprisings seen across the world over the last year that have been met by police brutality.
