This publication accompanies Sreshta Rit Premnath’s 2025 exhibition Overbody at Bennington College’s Usdan Gallery and extends his exploration of interstitial spaces between bodies and places as sites of care, responsibility, and political action. It features movement scores by Mina Nishimura and Kota Yamazaki, created in response to Premnath’s work and presented alongside his preparatory drawings. The book also includes a conversation between the artist and Usdan Gallery Director Anne Thompson.

Through sculptures, paintings, and wxeavings, Overbody examines the instability of borders and the forces that give them form. Central to this body of work are Premnath’s “slumps” and the concept of the “overbody”—an invisible pressure that shapes and disciplines the body, which the sculptures resist through precarious and incomplete gestures. His use of gray as a color of potentiality draws on Kisho Kurokawa’s idea of “Rikyu Grey” and resonates with the philosophies of Butoh.

The word “knot” describes a difficult problem, a fastening, or an uncomfortable mass, tightness or tension. Sreshta Rit Premnath charts his artistic practice through the multiple definitions of this term: it is a making-visible of knots. The artist’s solo exhibition, Those Who Wait, at the Contemporary Art Gallery—his first in Canada—offered an occasion to consider the particular knots that have bound his practice for the past six years: the contradiction between the occupation and ownership of space, and the conditions of visibility and mis-recognition that define migrant experience. Drawing a line through a series of material, conceptual and written propositions articulated across numerous exhibition projects, and punctuated by astute contributions by US-based critical theory scholar Avram Alpert and Brazilian writer and curator Tiago de Abreu Pinto, this book offers an archive of these investigations.
